Bergen City tour - Castle edition
Discover Bergen Like a Local
Service Description
Step into Bergen’s royal past on a guided walking tour that blends the city’s iconic charm with a visit to Gamlehaugen—the official royal residence when the King is in Bergen. This exclusive small-group experience starts in the heart of Bergen, where we explore cultural highlights such as the Blue Stone, the bustling Fish Market, and authentic Bunad (Norwegian national costume) boutiques. Your local guide shares stories and insights that bring Bergen’s rich cultural heritage to life. Next, we ride the historic Fløibanen Funicular to the summit of Mount Fløyen, taking in panoramic views of Bergen, the surrounding fjords, and the majestic mountain landscape—a breathtaking and unforgettable scene. Descending into the heart of the city, we wander through Lille Øvregaten, one of Bergen’s oldest streets, and explore the lively, local-favorite Skostredet, filled with cozy cafés, creative shops, and vibrant charm. We then travel by public transport to Gamlehaugen, a striking castle on the outskirts of Bergen. As the official royal residence when the King is in Bergen, it stands as a symbol of national heritage, surrounded by peaceful parkland and a beautiful lake. Feeling adventurous? If you’d like, you’re welcome to take a dip in the lake by the castle—just let us know ahead of time and bring a towel! Returning to Bergen city center, we conclude the day with a tasting of the same beer King Christian II is said to have favored—especially during the years following the tragic loss of his beloved Dyveke. After her suspicious death—believed to be by poisoning—he fell into despair. Following his downfall and imprisonment, he reportedly survived on nothing but bread and beer. We end the tour with a relaxed talk, where we offer personal recommendations for restaurants, hikes, or local places to visit if you’re interested. Join us for a day of discovery, storytelling, and unforgettable moments in one of Norway’s most charming and culturally rich cities.
